Alberta's SuperNet was built to enrich the lives of all Albertans.
It allows the Government of Alberta to deliver services to Albertans that weren't possible before, such as:
- allowing students from remote rural areas of Alberta to go on virtual field trips to places like the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller and the Glenbow Museum in Calgary
- providing residents in communities with small healthcare clinics with access to specialists, surgeons and health practitioners in urban centers
- enabling quilting enthusiasts in remote rural towns to connect with fellow sewing lovers in other locations via videoconference at their local library
But it is more than a government network delivering services to Albertans. The Alberta SuperNet was built so that we can all benefit from it at home and at work as well. In addition to connecting government locations, there are Points of Presence (PoPs) in 429 Alberta communities, many of them very small or remotely located. Internet Service Providers can connect to these PoPs to provide high speed Internet service to rural communities where previously only a dial-up connection was available.
This means that everyday activities like online shopping, surfing the Internet and sending pictures to friends and family in other parts of the world are now possible. Grandparents can connect with their grandchildren on video calls. Students have easy access to online resources for school projects. And home based enterprises can establish an on-line presence and expand their market into other areas.
In addition, businesses located in small towns or remote areas now have access to the same level of connectivity and communications as those in larger urban centres. Operational data can be easily and quickly transferred from site locations back to head office. Employees can attend specialized training sessions in Calgary or Edmonton via videoconference, eliminating the need to travel. And regional offices can communicate with each other without needing to rely on slow or undependable Internet connections.
In short, it can transform the way we live, work and play.
Alberta's SuperNet is for all of us.
